Why Endurance Matters for Long-Distance Running

Long-distance running—whether you're training for a 10K, half marathon, or marathon—depends on your body's ability to sustain aerobic effort over time. Improving endurance means increasing your aerobic capacity, delaying fatigue, and teaching your muscles to use fuel efficiently.

Key Principles to Improve Running Endurance

1. Build a Strong Aerobic Base

The foundation of endurance is aerobic base training. Spend 6–8 weeks running at a conversational pace (about 60–70% of your maximum heart rate) before adding intensity. This develops capillaries, mitochondria, and slow-twitch muscle fibers.

2. Follow the 80/20 Rule

Elite runners follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of runs at low intensity and 20% at moderate-to-high intensity. This balances adaptation with recovery and reduces injury risk.

3. Increase Mileage Gradually
